International year of chemistry 2011

2011 is the international year of chemistry. But do you really know its importance in modern contemporary societies?

Oxygen

Now an educative and funny video about the oxygen. Enjoy it!

The known universe

I love this video from the American Museum of Natural History. We still have to discover so many things of the universe!

Volcanoes

These days the Eyjafjallajökull volcano, in Iceland, is doing much to talk due to all problems that is causing in the air traffic. There are many volcanoes known for the extensive damage caused to man. Vesuvius (Italy), Krakatoa (Indonesia), Mont Pelée (France) and Chichón (Mexico) are some of the best known.

Sean Stiegemeier, photographer, graphic designer and director from California, has known to capture the beauty of the annoying eruption of the icelandic volcano.

Not everything related to the volcano has to be bad....

Eternal life

Jeanne L
ouise Calment died in 1997 after 122 years and 164 days of active life. She had the longest (reliably reported) lifespan for any human being in history (February 21, 1875 - August 4, 1997). Her lifespan has been thorouhly documented by scientific studies.

But her feat will fade if the predictions of some biologist and demographers are right. The extending of life in some species such as mushrooms and mices, and their extrapolation to human life expectancy seems to convince much of the scientific community that humans will routinely live between 100 and 110 years. Others, however, think that the elasticity found in other species can not apply to us.

On the other hand, since more than a decade is known the existence of an unique creature among all. This is the jellyfish Turritopsis nutricula, which is inmortal. Since it discovery, this jellyfish has been subjected to genetic and biological analysis of all types to try to rip off, without success, the secret of its immortality. You can find detailed online articles about its biology and characteristics, e.g. the one published by Piraino et al in Biol. Bull. 190: 302-312 (June, 1996).

This gives much food for thought!

Noah's Ark was found in turkey. Fraud or great find?

A research team composed of evangelical Turkish and Chinese experts have found the legendary Noah's Ark in the Ararat Mount (Turkey). These archaelogists are almost convinced of this..... And you? What do you think about this discovery?

Don't you think surprising to find an old wooden structure at an altitude of 4000 meters and age of 4800 years, exactly at the same place mentioned in the Bible?

Gulf of Mexico disaster

Again, oil is protagonist of on of the largest environmental disasters in the marine environmental. No one can calculate the magnitude of the disaster, but certainly we are facing a critical situation that contaminates areas of special environmental value for decades. When will we learn the lesson? Will we rethink once and for all our addiction to oil and truly implement a new energy model that minimizes these risks?
